Leodegar (Leger)

Leodegar (Leger)
(c. 616–79)
   Bishop, Saint and Martyr.
Leodegar was Bishop of Autun, France, and he did much to reform his diocese. He also became involved in the politics of his time and he was eventually tortured, blinded and put to death by one of the rivals for the Frankish throne. Although he was killed for political reasons, he was soon regarded as a martyr and his cult spread throughout France to England. The famous horse race, the St Leger, was named after a Colonel of that name.
